AEW’s WrestleDream faces possible restrictions in St. Louis

AEW’s WrestleDream hits Chaifetz Arena in St. Louis on Saturday night. But Missouri regulations may force the company known for its blood and violence to rein it in.

Missouri’s Office of Athletics enforces rules under Division 2040, Chapter 5, which covers professional wrestling, boxing, kickboxing, and karate. One key rule, 20 CSR 2040-5.030, Section 12, titled “Disallowed Activities,” lists actions that are prohibited during wrestling matches.

That includes specific restrictions on weapon use:

“No wrestling contestant may use a foreign object(s) or prop(s) with the deliberate intent to lacerate himself or herself, or one’s opponent.”

However, the regulation also allows some flexibility:

“The intent to use a foreign object(s) or prop(s) during a wrestling match must be disclosed to the office prior to any wrestling contest and be subject to the approval of the inspector present at the event. This shall include any vial, capsule, or container holding a gel substance that is meant to simulate blood.”

Another rule that could alter the “I Quit” match prohibits “inhibiting breathing by covering the nose and mouth at the same time.” This could potentially ban Moxley’s use of a plastic bag, a tactic both he and Allin have used in the past.

Section 18 holds the promoter responsible for the conduct of their staff and wrestlers, requiring the event to be run in a safe, orderly manner. Violations by any representative can lead to disciplinary action against the promoter.

As long as AEW boss Tony Khan and his team follow protocol, WrestleDream should go off without a hitch.

AEW has run several shows in Missouri before — including Dynamite, Collision, and Rampage — all without incident. In 2024, St. Louis hosted Dynasty, which featured an FTW Rules Match between Hook and Chris Jericho for the FTW Title. That match saw the use of kendo sticks, trash cans, and tables — but many fans remember it for the loud “Please retire” chants aimed at Jericho.
